Here in the states, March Madness is upon us with a fury. In a few short days, productivity across the country will plummet for several weeks while fans cheer on their favorite college basketball teams as they battle one another for the national title (go Cats!).

We're busy too, getting ready for Into the Box 2014. ITB 2014 is an awesome 1-day, 2-track conference that covers a host of topics surrounding various web technologies. It's the day before cf.Objective(), so if you're planning to attend that conference, why not come 1 day early and catch an extra dose of knowledge? There are at least 5 great reasons that you should get your ticket today!

One of those reasons is our awesome lineup of speakers, which includes this week's featured speaker: George Murphy!

Q & A with George

Q: What made you want to speak at Into The Box 2014?
A: Speaking at the Box 2014 is something I did not have to think twice about. As many of you know I have always said that my acceptance and embracing of the MVC methodology changed my life as a developer. Learning ColdBox and its many featured products has enriched me as a developer and a person. I get really excited when I explain to others about this technology. I truly love helping developers accept the ColdBox way of doing things.

Q: What does web development mean to you?
A:
Working in the government space can really limit what you are able to do; however, when you say framework most unknowledgeable people get afraid because they to not understand it. For folks like this I have been able to introduce Wirebox, which has allowed me to tame many legacy applications that were dying a slow death. On my last project at the US Department of State, I was brought in to resurect a global application that is used at every US Embassy and US Consulte in the world. It was running on Flex 4.5 and ColdFusion 9.01 and it was literally crashing everyday. The main culprit was a lack of caching and slow running database requests. Through the use of CacheBox and Logbox, which comes embedded in Wirebox, I was able to introduce a global logging and caching strategy which helped bring this vital application back to life. Logbox allowed us to easily get down to a granular level on what was causing these errors and CacheBox allowed us to take many of the slow running processes and tame them

Q: Anything you want to experience during the conference?
A: During this conference, I am looking to get a better understanding of how the ContentBox pieces come together. I can see a true value for it in the government space. The custom content types will be a true game changer for ContentBox. As most of you know most large government sites are anything but straight forward. Custom content types will give ContentBox the ability to take care of that niche audience.

Q: What advice would you give to your younger self, knowing what you know now?
A:
Knowing what I know now, if I could have embraced MVC as soon as it came out I would be much further along. I had a colleague who recently told me he hated MVC and frameworks. I told him that I understood how he felt. It was a feeling I had once as well. I shared with him how it had changed my worth and value as a developer. Recently he asked me to share some code with him, and it brought a warm feeling in my heart for I knew he was starting to change.

Q: This year's lineup of speakers has lots of quality, what other session(s) are you looking forward to attending?
A:
I am looking forward to all of the sessions at the Into The Box 2014 conference. The sessions that most interest me are learning more about how to use TestBox and how to leverage it outside of ColdBox.
