Q & A with Joel

Q: What made you want to speak at Into The Box 2014?
A: I’m a big believer in giving back the good that you've received. Over the last 7 years of my web development experience, I've been fortunate to learn from extremely talented developers and mentors. I’m very grateful for the expertise that has been shared with me, so I am always looking for opportunities to share the experience that I've gained, hopefully to inspire others and be a part of building a stronger, more vibrant community of web technology professionals.

Q: What does web development mean to you?
A:
To me, web development is a way that I express myself, an avenue for creativity and exploration that I've not found in any other aspect of my life. I love the sense of accomplishment that comes with taking an idea and turning into something that is useful and beneficial to others.I also just get excited about the future--there are very few other opportunities for employment that provide the chance (and necessity!) to learn and grow; it's truly a pleasure to be a part of that!

Q: Anything you want to experience during the conference?
A: I'm looking forward to meeting a lot of new people from the community. I interact with individuals online all the time, but very rarely get to forge relationships in person.

Q: What advice would you give to your younger self, knowing what you know now?
A:
My biggest advice would be to start sooner! I didn't start into my web development career until about half-way through a completely unrelated graduate degree. If I had it to do over, I would love to have started a lot sooner on the web so that I could be even farther along now!

Q: This year's lineup of speakers has lots of quality, what other session(s) are you looking forward to attending?
A:
I'm really looking forward to NoSQL Development with CFCouchbase and Enterprise Box Architecture .

Into The Box Isn't About ColdBox!

News flash-- the Into The Box conference this May (one day before cf.Objective() ) isn't about ColdBox!  Well part of it is, but only a little.  There's way more stuff in here that can apply to ANY developer regardless of what framework you're using (or NOT using).  In fact, the vast majority of the 14 sessions that day have nothing do with ColdBox MVC.  Sure, we'd love for all of you to be enjoying the productivity of ColdBox, but we realize it's a big world out there and there are other compelling frameworks that people use.  That's why we've detached all our tools into standalone libraries so any one can benifit from them.

Ortus Solutions is behind this conference and while Ortus is the maker of ColdBox, they're also the company that has brought TestBox, ContentBox CMS, WireBox, Cachebox, etc. to the CFML world.  Our focus is to make good tools and libraries like our open source NoSQL and caching SDK, CFCouchbase.  I can't wait until the keynote demos.  If all goes as planned, we'll be opening up ForgeBox to the entire community and showing off our new CFML-based CLI package manager!  We're bringing CFML back up to speed with communities like Ruby and Node and we want you on board!

So, if you've heard about Into The Box and thought "Nah, I don't use ColdBox" then please reconsider the opportunity you're passing up.   If you're already attending cf.Objective()-- and you should be-- just move your flight forward a day, schedule an extra night and enjoy the 25% off we offering cf.Objective() attendees.

See you there!

Q & A with Adrian

Q: What made you want to speak at Into The Box 2014?
A: As soon as Luis said, "hey, I'm doing this thing" I was in. I've been using ColdBox and its related tech for four & half years, so of course I wanted to involved with a conference about them. I can't imagine building ColdFusion applications without ColdBox, WireBox and the rest.

Q: What does web development mean to you?
A:
Web Development is like poker. It looks like a lot of fun on the surface, but underneath, there's a world of knowledge and experience required to do it right. If you're not careful, it can be a grind. It's up to you to keep learning new tricks and keep it fun.

Q: Anything you want to experience during the conference?
A: I'm hoping for a "wow" factor. Something that jumps out and solves a problem I didn't realize I have.

Q: What advice would you give to your younger self, knowing what you know now?
A:
Those website ideas you have? Make them happen or someone else will.

Q: This year's lineup of speakers has lots of quality, what other session(s) are you looking forward to attending?
A:
Enterprise Box Architecture, Behavior-Driven Development and Just Mock It! are the three sessions I'm really interested in attending.
