Q & A with Luis

What made you want to speak at Into The Box?

I guess I have no choice as I am the one organizing the conference :)
Apart from being the organizer, I am also the author of the majority of the products, so it is a delight to be able to have a venue to speak about them.

What does web development mean to you?

Ever since I was a kid I loved to solve problems. I also loved when you have a blank canvas and you can paint or create a project from nothing.  Web development is a career where problem-solving is at its best.  Full of challenges, intricacies and lots lots of learning.  For those reasons, web development is just something that is part of me that I love.

Anything you want to experience during the conference?

A sense of community.  Last year we had a blast.  Over 60 developers and managers from around the globe converging for more than 12 hours of geekness and fun!  Being able to meet folks from all walks of life, talk to them and get a first-hand perspective is priceless!

What advice would you give to your younger self, knowing what you know now?

Warm up before any tennis match, if not your knees will regret it!

This year's lineup of speakers has lots of quality, what other session(s) are you looking forward to attending?

Winning with Vagrant, Puppet and Chef

Matt is a great speaker, super talented and funny.  The topic is something that really interests me in how to bring even more automation into our development.

Real Life ContentBox Modular CMS

This session will feature 3 speakers and how they implement a real-life project in 50 minutes.  So I can’t wait to see if they actually pull-it off.

Behavior Driven Development, Automation and Continuous Integration

This is my own session, but I am mostly looking forward to badgering Kev McCabe :)

Luis's Sessions

Go Commando with CommandBox CLI

CommandBox is a standalone, native tool for Windows, Mac, and Linux that will provide you with a Command Line Interface (CLI) for developer productivity, tool interaction, package management, embedded CFML server, application scaffolding, and some sweet ASCII art. It seamlessly integrate to work with any ColdFusion (CFML) project as it is also written in ColdFusion (CFML) using our concepts of CommandBox Commands.

Killing Shark-Riding Dinosaurs with ORM

We have gone through the pain and frustrations that come with maturing with a technology such as ORM powered by Hibernate. This advanced session will cover on how to leverage both ColdFusion and ORM to start creating amazing applications that will be as lethal as a dinosaur riding a shark with an Uzi. We will cover ORM session management, virtual service layers, dynamic finders, dynamic counters and an enhanced Hibernate Criteria builder for ColdFusion to create easy and programmatic HQL queries.

Behavior Driven Development, Automation and Continuous Integration

In this session we will explore the semantics and theory behind Behavior Driven Development and how it can unify a team with its ubiquitous language. We will then go in a tour of TestBox for applying BDD/TDD into our CFML applications. Our tour will end with setting up a Jenkins Continous Integration Server and building scripts for automated testing and reporting.

Q & A with Nathaniel

What made you want to speak at Into The Box?

I love the community and enjoy sharing what I know. Hopefully this will help some folks try new things.

What does web development mean to you?

It's a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it's some of the most enjoyable and rewarding work I've ever done. On the other hand, it has its own share of frustrations and irritations.

Anything you want to experience during the conference?

As usual with the ColdFusion community and ColdBox group, I'm looking forward to the camaraderie and mutual support. It's nice to be among friends.

What advice would you give to your younger self, knowing what you know now?

Keep trying. Keep learning. There's always something new around the bend.

This year's lineup of speakers has lots of quality, what other session(s) are you looking forward to attending?

I'm interested to see the Preside presentation. I don't work with the product, but I've heard great things.

Brad Wood

Brad grew up in southern Missouri and after high school majored in Computer Science with a music minor at MidAmerica Nazarene University (Olathe, KS). Today he lives in Kansas City with his wife and three girls. Brad enjoys all sorts of international food and the great outdoors.

Brad has been programming ColdFusion for 12 years and has used every version of CF since 4.5. He first fell in love with ColdFusion as a way to easily connect a database to his website for dynamic pages. He enjoys configuring and performance tuning high-availability Windows and Linux ColdFusion environments as well as SQL Server.

Q & A with Brad

What made you want to speak at Into The Box?

I love the Box stack and had a great time last year. I love learning and I love helping others learn, and there's a lot to learn about making yourself more productive with the box stack.

What does web development mean to you?

Web development is really what got me into programming in general. It started as a hobby in college and turned into a love that also happens to be part of my job.

Anything you want to experience during the conference?

I'm hoping there's a mariachi band again. My absolute favorite part though was just sitting around with people and talking about their workflows, how they code, and getting their feedback on how to make the Box stack better.

What advice would you give to your younger self, knowing what you know now?

Don't change a thing.

This year's lineup of speakers has lots of quality, what other session(s) are you looking forward to attending?

Like I said before-- my favorite "sessions" at any conference are the impromptu ones around someone else's laptop in the hallway as you show off cool stuff. That said, "Killing Shark-Riding Dinosaurs with ORM" sounds pretty amazing just from the name, and I'm excited to see the "PresideCMS - create a site from scratch" session just to see what cool things PresideCMS does since it's all built on ColdBox.

Brad's Sessions

99 Days for Into The Box

Into The Box is only 99 days away and in the next coming weeks we will be highlighting our speakers and their awesome sessions.  So remember to mark May 12th, 2015, 1 day before dev. Objective, on your calendar and don't forget to secure your ticket in time.  One of the speakers that will be at Into The Box this year is this week's feature speaker: Seth Engen.

Seth Engen

Seth Engen is a co-owner of Computer Know How, a Wisconsin based technology firm that he started with Curt Gratz in 1997. At the companies start he was introduced to CFML (version 4) and has been programming in the language ever since. Seth really enjoys creating web applications with great user interface experiences.

Q & A with Seth

What made you want to speak at Into The Box?

It is always nice for me to have an opportunity to spread the word about any of the *Box products.  I have always been impressed with the companies that support their development and the product that result from these efforts.  The world needs to know and I will do my part to help in that cause!

What does web development mean to you?

Since the first time I loaded a web page that I had created I knew I was doing something I loved.  It is fulfilling for me to create something that will solve a business problem for a client and to see their gratitude as they use the product.  It is such of an ever-changing landscape and that is what makes every day new and exciting.

Anything you want to experience during the conference?

It is always the highlight to see fellow developers that we have talked to via our interactions throughout the year.  The talent of those developers is fun to experience as they present on their respective areas of expertise.  The *Box products are numerous and always undergoing changes...I like to find those things I have been missing or have yet to implement.

What advice would you give to your younger self, knowing what you know now?

Learn, learn, and keep learning.  Oh and by the way, that Netflix like product you had created with the web development class you were teaching...go with that idea...it just might work.

This year's lineup of speakers has lots of quality, what other session(s) are you looking forward to attending?

I am really excited about CommandBox so the presentations by Luis Majano "Go Commando with CommandBox CLI" and Brad Wood "Package Management and Automation with CommandBox" are of interest to me.
