Speaker Feature - Brad Wood

In just over 6 weeks, an epic day of web technology awesomeness will break out in Bloomington, MN (check out the trailer!). With sessions covering a wide variety of web-tech-centric topics led by a talented lineup of speakers, Into the Box 2014 is the perfect way to kick off your week at cf.Objective, or just sharpen your skills if you're in the area. Whatever your reasons for attending, don't wait--get your ticket today!

Did I mention our awesome speakers? Say hello to this week's featured speaker: Brad Wood!

Q & A with Brad

Q: What made you want to speak at Into The Box 2014?
A: I love the *Box toolset because it makes developers’ lives easier, saves time, and is always built to be extensible. I also love helping others learn and improve their development workflow so it’s natural that I love to share our projects with anyone who will listen. I think Into The Box is going to be a blast and I’m really looking forward to getting together with everyone to geek out.

Q: What does web development mean to you?
A:
It’s a job, an art, a craft, an opportunity for improvement, so easy a caveman could do it, a pain in the rear, and hard to do well. I think good developers have an insatiable desire to solve problems, read lots of theory, are always learning, and find the best tools they can (like the ColdBox ecosystem). I also think the two hardest things about web development are class naming, cache invalidation, and off-by-one errors.

Q: Anything you want to experience during the conference?
A: Reach the peak of Mount Everest, go tandem skydiving, break the sound barrier, have an album go double platinum, try bungee jumping, and experience suborbital flight. In the event those fall through, I’ll settle for the old fashioned camaraderie of old pals and new friends.

Q: What advice would you give to your younger self, knowing what you know now?
A:
Take the blue pill. That DayQuil will have you up all night.

Q: This year's lineup of speakers has lots of quality, what other session(s) are you looking forward to attending?
A:
Dependency Injection: Wiring Up for the Future, ColdBox + ORM: Pink Unicorns Do Exist! and The Keynote

Speaker Feature - George Murphy

Here in the states, March Madness is upon us with a fury. In a few short days, productivity across the country will plummet for several weeks while fans cheer on their favorite college basketball teams as they battle one another for the national title (go Cats!).

We're busy too, getting ready for Into the Box 2014. ITB 2014 is an awesome 1-day, 2-track conference that covers a host of topics surrounding various web technologies. It's the day before cf.Objective(), so if you're planning to attend that conference, why not come 1 day early and catch an extra dose of knowledge? There are at least 5 great reasons that you should get your ticket today!

One of those reasons is our awesome lineup of speakers, which includes this week's featured speaker: George Murphy!

Q & A with George

Q: What made you want to speak at Into The Box 2014?
A: Speaking at the Box 2014 is something I did not have to think twice about. As many of you know I have always said that my acceptance and embracing of the MVC methodology changed my life as a developer. Learning ColdBox and its many featured products has enriched me as a developer and a person. I get really excited when I explain to others about this technology. I truly love helping developers accept the ColdBox way of doing things.

Q: What does web development mean to you?
A:
Working in the government space can really limit what you are able to do; however, when you say framework most unknowledgeable people get afraid because they to not understand it. For folks like this I have been able to introduce Wirebox, which has allowed me to tame many legacy applications that were dying a slow death. On my last project at the US Department of State, I was brought in to resurect a global application that is used at every US Embassy and US Consulte in the world. It was running on Flex 4.5 and ColdFusion 9.01 and it was literally crashing everyday. The main culprit was a lack of caching and slow running database requests. Through the use of CacheBox and Logbox, which comes embedded in Wirebox, I was able to introduce a global logging and caching strategy which helped bring this vital application back to life. Logbox allowed us to easily get down to a granular level on what was causing these errors and CacheBox allowed us to take many of the slow running processes and tame them

Q: Anything you want to experience during the conference?
A: During this conference, I am looking to get a better understanding of how the ContentBox pieces come together. I can see a true value for it in the government space. The custom content types will be a true game changer for ContentBox. As most of you know most large government sites are anything but straight forward. Custom content types will give ContentBox the ability to take care of that niche audience.

Q: What advice would you give to your younger self, knowing what you know now?
A:
Knowing what I know now, if I could have embraced MVC as soon as it came out I would be much further along. I had a colleague who recently told me he hated MVC and frameworks. I told him that I understood how he felt. It was a feeling I had once as well. I shared with him how it had changed my worth and value as a developer. Recently he asked me to share some code with him, and it brought a warm feeling in my heart for I knew he was starting to change.

Q: This year's lineup of speakers has lots of quality, what other session(s) are you looking forward to attending?
A:
I am looking forward to all of the sessions at the Into The Box 2014 conference. The sessions that most interest me are learning more about how to use TestBox and how to leverage it outside of ColdBox.

Q & A with Seth

Q: What made you want to speak at Into The Box 2014?
A: It is always nice for me to have an opportunity to spread the word about any of the *Box products. I have always been impressed with the companies that support their development and the product that result from these efforts. The world needs to know and I will do my part to help in that cause!

Q: What does web development mean to you?
A: Since the first time I loaded a web page that I had created I knew I was doing something I loved. It is fulfilling for me to create something that will solve a business problem for a client and to see their gratitude as they use the product. It is such of an ever changing landscape which makes every day new and exciting.

Q: Anything you want to experience during the conference?
A: It is always the highlight to see fellow developers that we have talked to via our interactions throughout the year. The talent of those developers is fun to experience as they present on their respective areas of expertise. The *Box products are numerous and always undergoing changes...I like to find those things I have been missing or have yet to implement.

Q: What advice would you give to your younger self, knowing what you know now?
A: Learn, learn, and keep learning. Oh and by the way, that Netflix like product you had created with the web development class you were teaching...go with that idea...it just might work.

Q: Anything you want to experience during the conference?
A: I am interested in Pete Freitag and Brad Wood’s “Securing Your Box Applications” session because this is ever changing and no doubt something that can always be done better. The “Meet The Family: WireBox, CacheBox, LogBox, & TestBox” should be informative and definitely entertaining as a result of the crew presenting. Lastly, because of its recent addition to the Box family I am excited to see [the] “An Introduction to Behavior-Driven Development (with TestBox)” session.

Q & A with Pete

Q: What made you want to speak at Into The Box 2014?
A: I have a lot of respect for Luis, Brad, the entire ColdBox team and what they have built. I'm looking forward to the opportunity to speak to and meet some ColdBox developers!

Q: What does web development mean to you?
A: I love programming and web development because I love to build stuff and see the finished product. It probably all started with Lego's when I was a kid.

Q: What advice would you give to your younger self, knowing what you know now?
A: Don't bother learning Enterprise Java Beans 1.0, you'll never use it. Being able to differentiate fads from valuable assets in your developer toolbelt is something that takes time to figure out. I probably should have spent less time worrying about interesting technologies and spent more time focusing on core concepts that span technologies, such as Object Oriented Design. I still use that today, and will for years to come.

Q: Anything you want to experience during the conference?
A: Really looking forward to learning more about ColdBox and its Box friends from the experts.

Q: This year’s lineup of speakers has lots of quality, what other session(s) are you looking forward to attending?
A: I am just starting to use TestBox so I am looking forward to learning more about that. it It will be hard to pick which session to go to at several of the slots, I'm interested in just about every single topic.
